New Decade brings my Diabetic Kitty “Blacktop” problems.

In my last months post I told you how Blacktop’s blood sugar had risen to dangerous levels which caused him coordination problems etc…so the vet increased his insulin dosage back to 2 units.

Okay the New Decade rolled around…..it’s 2010 yea!

Blacktop on his new 2 unit dosage eventually went back to low blood sugar symptoms….oh no it is a never ending regulation problem…poor Blacktop. It seems 1 unit is not enough and 2 or 3 is too much. One problem when the dosage is in a small range of difference it may take a week or two to notice any differences.

As you know I have one healthy cat (mother) and one sick cat(son). That means separate food and feeding locations. I only use one liter box for both cats. I have grown accustomed to noticing the size of the urine clumps and do notice the larger they are the higher Blacktops blood sugar levels are. So the clumps are a good non-technical gauge for me. Princess’s clumps are always small and the same….so I know the larger are Blacktops.

Anyway after the new symptoms of  low blood sugar returned my vet told me to immediately drop the dosage back to 1 unit. The bottom line here is you would rather deal with high blood sugar than a low blood sugar coma. We both agreed that his correct dosage is approximately 1 1/2 (One and a half) units. So after a couple of weeks on 1 unit I am gradually moving Blacktop back to 1 1/2 units. It’s tough to get an accurate measurement since 1 1/2 falls between the lines on the syringe and also you have to tap the bubbles out of the syringe.

As it stands now Blacktop is doing ok and we will see in a few more days how his regular dose of 1 1/2 units is working out. I will update you in a few days.
