My Diabetic Kitty “Blacktop” Update
Well here it is almost the end of Feb 2010. After a wicked start of the New Decade my Diabetic Kitty Blacktop is doing great!
I am so happy to see him doing so well after all the hell he has been through over the last couple of months. I truly hope that all diabetic cats with feline diabetes do not go through all of what my diabetic cat has gone through.
I’m sure it happens to a lot of them though. Thank God for loving owners who will work hard to keep them in good shape and be aware of their symptoms. Keeping a close eye on them and knowing the symptoms is key to keep our diabetic pets regulated. Go to my post on Symptom Awareness to find out what to watch for. http://diabetickitty.com/stand-up-for-you-pet/symptom-awareness/common-symptoms-of-a-diabetic-kitty/
A big key to our last visit to the Vet for the Blood Sugar Curve Test…I don’t know if that is the official name for the test, but it is the test where your diabetic cat stays there all day and gets his blood/glucose checked every couple of hours. The key was that I brought in Blacktops regular feeding food, but ALSO brought in his snack food I had been giving him.
I give Blacktop 1/2 can of Purina DM at 9:00 a.m. along with his 1 1/2 units of Insulin to start the day. Now 4 hours later I give him about a 1/4 cup of Purina DM Dry Food for a snack with NO Insulin. Four or five hours later I repeat the dry food feeding. And then at 9:00 P.M. he gets his 2nd half of the canned wet Purina DM and his 2nd Insulin shot of the day. That’s it until the following morning at 9:00 a.m.
Now that the Vet knows everything he is eating including snacks we can keep better track of his symptoms and why they appear.
I can tell Blacktop feels a lot better because I actually saw him playing a few days ago. Normally and still mostly he sleeps a lot.
And just a note on Mama cat Princess she seems to be doing well, but maybe a little edgy lately…so I will have to keep an eye on her too.
Feel free to write in about your own happenings with your Diabetic Cat or any pet you have with Pet Diabetes. My Diabetic Kitty needs some company and pen pals…lol.
Steve
