How is Blacktop doing with his NEW Insulin?
Blacktop switched to his NEW Insulin brand a little over a month ago. See my previous post for details.
Knock on wood Blacktop has handled the switch real well. I have kept a very watchful eye on him during the last month. You really have to observe closely because any adjustments made may very well take a few days to show up in your cat’s behavior.
Before the switch I was giving Blacktop between 1 and 1 & 1/2 units of PZI twice a day 12 hours apart.
Since the switch I have increased his dose gradually to 2 units.
Why did I do this? I have monitored the size of his urine clumps since the switch and they were quite large which is a sign that his blood sugar is still high. Now let me say this. His clumps were large before the switch, but when I tried to increase his dosage on the old PZI he would always have adverse reactions.
Since increasing his dose on his new insulin I have noticed the urine clump size getting smaller with NO adverse reactions as of yet. I am still monitoring, as this is a very delicate process.
One thing I want to make very clear here. DO NOT attempt changing your cat’s dosage without consulting with your VET. Only make changes under the direction of your VET. There are many factors to determing the correct dosage for you pet and your Vet should be the final decision in making any type of adjustments.
I will keep posting news on this switch of medications for Blacktop.
